Quale's career-high 37 saves not enough to hold off Crimson

Benilde-St. Margaret's saw itself dominated for two periods and a furious third-period comeback fell short as third-ranked Maple Grove claimed the title of the Sports Authority Holiday Hockey Classic with a 5-3 win over the eighth-ranked Red Knights.

Justin Quale made a career-best 37 saves in the game, including 31 in the opening two periods, two give his team a chance to comeback in the third period.

The Crimson opened the game by scoring the first three goals of the contest before Dan Labosky's power-play goal with one minute, 10 seconds to play in the opening frame out a halt to Maple Grove's momentum.

The only goal of the second period belonged to the Crimson who, after holding a 20-7 advantage in shots on goal in the first period, outshot the Red Knights, 15-10.

BSM finally got on a roll in the third period, opening the final stanza on the power play. T.J. Moore scored with three seconds remaining on that power and Christian Horn scored at 6:32 to make it a one-goal game.

The Red Knights would outshoot Maple Grove, 20-7, in the final period but it was Kyle Koop's turn to shine as he kept BSM at bay and finally got some breathing room when Tony Paulson scored with 2:01 to play in the game.

Besides his goal, Horn added two assists to help accout for all three Red Knight goals. With the two helpers, he became the first player in school history to record 100 career assists.

BSM returns to action in the new year on Jan. 5, when it takes on Wayzata, which finished fourth in the Holiday Hockey Classic. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. at the Plymouth Ice Center.
