Minnetonka scores late to claim win over Red Knights

Just 55 seconds after Benilde-St. Margaret's tied the score in the third period, Minnetonka retook the lead and added an insurance goal in the game's final 90 seconds to give the second-ranked Skippers a 5-3 win over the sixth-ranked Red Knights.

Minnetonka never trailed in the game and grabbed the opening lead when Eric Baskin scored the first of his two goals, seven minutes, 25 seconds into the game.

T.J. Moore scored on the power play just over three minutes to tie the score but, another three minutes later, Sam Rothstein put the Skippers back on top.

The game swung back to the Red Knights barely a minute later when Jake Horton's shot from the inner edge of the left faceoff circle found the back of the net and, with the third power-play goal of the opening period, the score was tied 2-2.

Baskin's second goal of the game came at 7:50 of the second period and gave the Skippers a lead which they would hold for nearly 17 minutes.

However, 7:25 into the final period Moore finished off a goalmouth scramble by burying a rebound to tie the score with fewer than 10 minutes to play.

Just 55 seconds later Minnetonka took the lead for good on a Tommy Vannelli goal and, with 1:22 to play, Connor Thie clinched the win for the Skippers.

BSM had a 38-37 edge in shots on goal but Minnetonka won 44 of 73 faceoffs, which enabled the Skippers to control much of the game. Justin Quale, making back-to-back starts for the first time this season, stopped 32 shots for the Red Knights.

Next up for BSM is a return to North Suburban Conference play, Saturday, when the Red Knights take on Robbinsdale Cooper. The matinee meeting is scheduled for a 3 p.m. faceoff at New Hope Arena.
