Red Knights sweep weekend set

BSM extends win streak to eight games with wins over Hermantown and Grand Rapids.

BSM 6, Hermantown 3

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Class AA fifth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's and Class A second-ranked Hermantown got into a shootout, but the hosts scored the game's final three goals, snapping a 3-3 tie and rolling onto a 6-3 win.

Caleb Koskie recorded his second consecutive hat trick to pace the offense while Mason McElroy turned aside 33 of 36 shots.

Koskie scored the game's first two, giving BSM a 2-0 lead, one minutes, 35 seconds into the second frame.

Hermantown responded by scoring twice in a 1:14 span but Westan Quirk scored with 1:50 to play in the middle frame, giving the hosts a one-goal lead heading into the final frame.


Mason McElroy stopped 33 shots in a shootout that featured nine goals and 79 shots.

Once again, the Hawks tied the game, just 25 seconds into the third period, when Ford Skytta scored his second goal of the game.

Less than four minute later, Liam Moser put the Red Knights ahead for good when Cam Kirschner left a drop pass at the blue line on a 3-on-2 rush, and then headed to the net, bringing a pair of Hawks with him.

As the trio of players passed in front of the net, Moser shot through the screen and the home team would keep the lead from then on at Noah Johnson and Caleb Koskie, who completed his hat trick, put the game away.


BSM 5, Grand Rapids 1

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's went 2-for-3 on the power play and got a 24-save effort from Mason McElroy en route to an eighth straight win, a 5-1 victory over No. 14 Grand Rapids.

The Thunderhawks threw a scare into the Red Knights, scoring just 30 seconds into the game, but the Red Knights stayed the course, tying the game with 7:20 to play in the opening period as Caleb Koskie scored his fourth goal of the week.

BSM scored twice in each of the next two periods with the next three goals after Koskie's coming from blueliners.

Mason Stenger scored at 10:00 of the middle frame and, just over two minutes later, Jack Anderson buried a power-play goal for a 3-1 Red Knight lead heading into the final period.

Stenger scoring his second goal at 2:46 of the final period, on the power play, and Junior Podein, who missed Friday's game, finished the scoring with 7:34 to play in the game.

McElroy stopped 24 of 25 shots in the game, fininshing the two-game weekend series with 57 saves while facing 61 shots.

Next up for BSM is its season finale, Thursday. The Red Knights will look to clinch at least a share of the Metro West Conference in a 7 p.m. game versus Chanhassen at the Victoria Recreation Center.
