Red Knights bested by Spuds in rematch.

In a rematch of the semifinals of the Holiday Hockey Classic, seventh-ranked Moorhead avenged a two-goal loss to sixth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's by handings the Red Knights a 6-2 defeat.

The game started off well as Grant Besse scored just one minute, 27 seconds into the contest but the Spuds responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

The only goal of the second period came with 1:18 remaining in the stanza when Ben Newhouse's pass off the right-wing boards sent Besse in on Moorhead Michael Bitzer by himself and the Red Knight scoring leader notched his team-leading 24th goal of the season.

In addition to getting his team back to within a goal of the lead, the goal was significant as it was the 87th of Besse's career, tying him with Troy Riddle for the school's all-time record.

That one-marging lasted just 99 seconds as Tony Uglem, one of three Uglem brothers on the Moorhead squad, scored just 11 seconds into the final period.

BSM spent nearly one-third of the period killing penalties and it tooks its toll as the Red Knights, despite a 14-11 edge in shots on goal, were unable to sustain any momentum and would eventually give up a pair of late goals.

BSM had a 45-48 edge in shots on goal but were thwarted by Bitzer's 43-save performance. Justin Qualie, starting back-to-back games for just the second time in his career, turned aside 32 shots.

The Red Knights have another non-conference game on tap Tuesday when they face Bloomington Jefferson. Game time at the Bloomington Ice Garden is set for 7:15 p.m.
