Lundberg backstops win with 23-save performance

Trailing by a goal heading into the third period, Benilde-St. Margaret's exploded for five goals to claim a 6-2 junior varsity win over Bloomington Jefferson.

Despite scoring the only goal of the first period when Matt Cornell coralled a loose puck behind the Jaguars' net and found the back of the net with two minutes, 47 seconds on the clock, the Red Knights found themselves trailing, 2-1, heading into the final period after Jefferson scored twice in the first 3:30 of the second period.

Paul Lundberg kept his team in the game by stopping 14 shots over the first two periods and made nine more stops in the third period as the Red Knights mounted their comeback.

It took just 16 seconds into the final period for the BSM to tie the game as Austin Polson-McCannon evened the score and Mikey Lamb's broke the tie less than five minutes later, putting in his own rebound on the power-play goal to give the Red Knights the lead for good.

Just 44 seconds after Lamb had give the lead back to his team, Zach Gionet found the back of the net with 9:18 to play, giving BSM a 4-2 lead.

The score remained that way until the game's final minute when Tanner Ahlborn picked up a loose puck in the neutral and scored into an empty Jaguar net with 37 seconds to play.

With Charlie Mahon back in goal for Jefferson, John Lager's shot from the blueline found it's way into the net for his first goal of the season, finishing the scoring.

With the win, BSM is now 15-3-1 on the season.

The Red Knights return to North Suburban Conference action, Saturday, with a 5:30 p.m. game at Fogerty Arena in Blaine, versus Spring Lake Park.
