Meyer scores twice in win over Shattuck-St. Mary's

Nate Meyer scored twice and his assist on Evan Fleming's third period goal helped give Benilde-St. Margaret's its first lead of the game as the Red Knights claimed a 6-4 win over the Shattuck-St. Mary's midget AA team.

BSM had falled behind, 3-1, in the first period, only getting on the scoreboard when Matt Cornell's shot from just inside the blueline along the right wing boards found its way past Sabre goalie  Alex Corley midway through the period.

The Red Knights cut the lead to 3-2 just before the first intermission as Chris Hickok scored on a long shot and Meyer's first goal, two minutes, 11 seconds into the second period, eventually tied the score at 3-3.

The hosts came back to take a 4-3 lead with just over three minutes to play in the period but Meyer scored on the power play with 55 seconds to play in the frame to tie the score once again.

BSM got its third power-play opportunity of the game early in the final period and, at 2:41, Fleming scored his 13th goal of the year to put the Red Knights on top for good and Austin Polson-McCannon secured the win when he scored into an empty net with 18 seconds to play.

Paul Lundberg stopped 25 shots in the game to earn his eight win of the season for the Red Knights.

BSM returns to North Suburban Conference play Saturday, when it hosts Totino-Grace in a matinee game beginning at 12:30 p.m.
