Big Jake shines again in big game.

During the Holiday Hockey Classic, Jake O'Borsky scored game-winning goals in back-to-back games to send Benilde-St. Margaret's to the tourney's title game.

He came up with two big goals again, including another game winner, to help send the Red Knights to their fourth state tournament with a resounding 5-1 win over second-ranked Minnetonka in the Section 6AA championship game.

BSM's last trip to state, in 2008, also came at the expense of the Skippers when the Red Knights handed them a 3-2 overtime loss.

This time around, the game was decided much earlier.

It got off to a fast start for BSM when Jonah Johnson and Jack Glover worked a D-to-D passing play with Glover giving the puck to Zach Hale in the neutral zone.

Hale scored the game's first goal in Saturday's win over Robbinsdale Armstrong and he duplicated the feat when skated up the middle and put the puck past Minnetonka goalie Paul Ciaccio just two minutes, 24 seconds into the contest.

Barely four minutes later it was a 2-0 game when Patrick Graham dug the puck out of the left corner of his own zone to Christian Horn, who skated two-thirds the length of the ice before giving the puck to O'Borsky who tipped the pass past Ciaccio.

The Skippers would cut the lead in half when Tommy Vanelli picked up a turnover at the BSM blueline and immediately passed to Sam Rothstein, who ended Justin Quale's shutout streak at 225 minutes.

Although the next 24 minutes would be scoreless, the Red Knights controlled the game after that point.

They took a 3-1 lead with 1:48 to play in the second period when O'Borsky converted a Graham rebound.

Tyler Ellegard, who also assisted on O'Borsky's second goal, made it a 4-1 game at 9:46 of the final period when his long shot trickled through Ciaccio and, just 18 seconds later, O'Borsky sent Horn into the Minnetonka zone and the Red Knight co-captain, who recorded his 200th career point with his first-period assist, notched his 25th goal of the season.

Only four penalties were called in the game, with each team getting one power play chance. BSM converted its only oppportunity and was 3-for-3 in two games against Minnetonka this season.

The Class AA state tournament gets underway with quarterfinal action, March 8. The Red Knights will learn their opponent and game time Saturday when teams are seeded and pairings are announced by the Minnesota State High School League.
