Goal in final minute gives BSM win over Edina.

Despite being outplayed for long stretches, Benilde-St. Margaret's got quality goaltending from Justin Quale and Christian Horn set up one goal and scored the pivotal goal with 23.9 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Red Knights into the Class AA state quarterfinals with a 3-2 win over Edina.

Horn's first big play came early in the second period on a BSM power play. At the top of the left faceoff circle, he took a pass from T.J. Moore, stepped around a Hornet defender a slid a pass to Grant Besse at the right of the net.

From there, Besse lifted the puck into the top of the net for his 45th goal of the season and a 1-0 Red Knight lead, three minutes, 11 seconds into the second period.

Besse, the team's scoring leader, set up Dan Labosky just 17 seconds into the third period, after the team's entered the final period tied 1-1.

Patrick Graham took the puck behind his own net and passed the puck to Besse on the right wing boards in his own zone. Besse then turned and fired a rink-wide pass to Labosky, who turned on the jets, took an Edina defenseman wide on the left side, cut across the slot and, using a deke on goalie Willie Benjamin, went to his backhand to put the Red Knights ahead, 2-1.

It was a lead that would stand up for just 19 seconds before Andy Jordahl tied the game for the Hornets by getting a shot over Quale's glove from the right side of the BSM net.

The teams would skated for 16 minutes before that tie was broken. Jake O'Borsky forced a turnover in the neutral zone and Besse collected the loose puck, quickly moving it to Horn who sped around the Edina defense in the right circle and beat Benjamin over his glove hand.

The goal came just 40 seconds after the Red Knights had killed off a penalty and lifts BSM to its fourth state semifinal appearance.

The win pits the Red Knights against Lakeville South, a first-time state tournament semifinalist, which upset Duluth East, 3-2, in its quarterfinal game.

BSM is scheduled to face the Cougars at 8:19 p.m. at St. Paul's Xcel Energy center with the winner moving on to Saturday's state championship game.
