Labosky's hat trick highlights Red Knights' 10-1 win

Benilde-St. Margaret's struggled early but scored on three of its first five shots before rolling to a 10-1 win over Lakeville South to earn a spot in the Class AA state championship game.

The Red Knights capitalized on its few early scoring chances while Justin Quale kept the Cougars at bay in the early going.

Labosky scored on a sharp-angle shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle just 61 seconds into the game but Lakeville South would have the advantage in number of scoring chances early.

However, the Cougars could not get the puck past Quale and Grant Besse finally scored from the right circle after getting the puck in a scramble at 6:40.

Less than two minutes later, Besse sent Labosky on a breakaway to give BSM a 3-0 lead and then goals from its second and third lines, courtesy of a Tyler Ellegard rebound goal and an Alec Anderson deflection sent the Red Knights into the first intermission with a 5-0 lead while chasing Cougar goalie Tyler Schumacher from the game.

From that point, BSM went into cruise control as the Red Knights rested their top players often.

Besse scored his second goal of the game at 6:05 of the middle stanza and Jake Horton, playing forward, scored on a rush where he deked around a defenseman and lifted a shot over blocker of Hunter Ziniel while falling to the ice.

The Red Knights scored three times in the final period, getting two goals from Zack Hale, who assisted on Besse's first goal. Labosky scored on a short-handed breakaway after taking a long pass from Chase Jungels, who had collected a rebound off of relief goalie Anders Jecha.

The 10-1 win sends BSM to its first Class AA championship game where the Red Knights will face Hill-Murray. The teams met on Dec. 1 with BSM coming away with a 3-2 victory.

Game time, Saturday, at the Xcel Energy Center is scheduled for 7:19 p.m.
