Late goal pushes Spuds past Red Knights

Freshman Zach Risteau scored BSM's lone goal in his Red Knight debut.

Chase Driscoll poked home a loose puck in a goalmouth scramble with 13 seconds to play in the game, giving Moorhead a 2-1 junior varsity win over Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Jacob Odegard put the Spuds on top just 2:23 into the game and, less than five minutes later, the hosts found themselves on a five-minute power play when the Red Knights' Hunter Brennan was given major and game disqualification for checking from behind.

The visitors went onto kill the entire penalty, without a stoppage of play during the entire power play, and slowly began to take control of the game.

However, that control did not include finding the back of the net until just 16 seconds remained on the clock in the second period when Zach Risteau got BSM on the scoreboard to tie the game.

Off the ensuing faceoff, the puck came to Thomas Luedke on the left wing boards. As he turned to pass the puck, we was checked from behind by Codee Brace, who received a major and game disqualification for the hit with three seconds remaining in the middle stanza.

The Red Knights would record six shots on goal during the power play, and four more during another power play later in the period but they could not get the puck past Moorhead goalie Tanner Johnson, who made 14 saves in the final period.

BSM held a 31-18 advantage in shots on goal with Johnson, who played the final two periods in relief of starter Jacob Dittmer, stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced. Peter Thome made 16 saves for BSM.

The Red Knights have two home games on the dockett this week, beginning with Thursday's home opener at the St. Louis Park Rec Center versus Burnsville. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
