Besse, Moore tally four points in season-opening win

Grant Besse recorded his 200th career point with a third-period short-handed goal for his fourth point of the night.

Grant Besse set up T.J. Moore for the game's first two goals and Moore would later help set up Besse for two goals as the duo accounted for four of Benilde-St. Margarets' six goals in a 6-1 win at Moorhead.

It took just 54 seconds for the line of Moore, Besse and Dan Labosky to get the Red Knights on the scoreboard as Labosky gave Besse a cross-ice pass and he found Moore open in front of the net for an early 1-0 BSM lead.

The Red Knights would go on the power at 6:22 of the opening period and, once again, a Besse pass found Moore as BSM took a 2-0 lead.

A three-goal second period effectively put the game away for the visitors with Besse's power-play goal 37 seconds into the middle stanza making it a 3-0 game.

It was then time for the Red Knights newcomers to get involved in the scored.

Just 40 seconds after Besse's goal, Alec Baer and Chris Hickok chase a puck into the left corner of the Moorhead zone. Hickok deflected the puck off of the boards to Baer, who walked in from the side of the net and put the puck past Peter MacFarlane for his first goal as a Red Knight.

Spencer Naas made it 5-0 when Zack Hale won a battle on the right wing boards and got the puck to his classmate, who came in from the right circle and collected his first goal in a BSM sweater.

The Spuds would get four power-play chances in the final period and 10 of their 26 shots on goal on the night would come on those four opportunities, including Will Borgen's with 8:19 to play in the game.

A series of penalties had left Moorhead with a 4-on-3 power and, with 7:52 remaining to play, that turned into a 5-on-3 as Jayden Masseth came out of the Spuds' penalty box.

In the meantime, Moore picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and got it to Besse, who split two defenders and, while being taken to the ice, fired a shot over MacFarlane's should for a short-handed goal and the 200th point of his career.

In his BSM debut, Andrew Sprang stopped 25 of 26 shots to record the win. He stopped 22 of 23 shots over the last two periods, making 11 saves in each stanza.

The top-ranked Red Knights return home for a pair of games this week, facing No. 7 Burnsville, Thursday, and No. 6 Hill-Murray, Saturday. Both games are slated for 7 p.m. faceoffs at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
