Lack of power-play chances proves costly in loss to Blaine.

Grant Besse's two first-period goals helped the Red Knights take a 4-2 lead.

Blaine had five power-play chances and that, coupled with Benilde-St. Margaret's not getting a chance with the man-power advantage, led to the eighth-ranked Bengals 6-5 upset win of the fourth-ranked Red Knights.

With 4:50 to play in the game, BSM was whistled for its four penalty of the game and second in a three-minute span to set up the Blaine power play with the game tied at 5-5.

Less than a minute into the power play, Tyler Cline got the puck on the right-wing boards in the the Red Knights' zone. He walked into the faceoff circle and snapped a shot into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal.

The goal capped the Bengals third comeback of the night and gave them their only lead of the game. They had tied the game for a third time earlier in the period whe Ian Scheid sent a puck from the right point deep into the Red Knight zone. Tyler Cline snuck between the BSM net and goalie Andrew Sprang to pick up the puck and scored on a wrap around, beating Sprang to the left post.

The Red Knights had taken a 2-0 lead in the game's opening five minutes, 28 seconds, on goals by Dan Labosky and Grant Besse, but Blaine responded with two goals to tie the game with 3:59 to play in the opening stanza.

However, just 13 seconds later, BSM regained the lead when the Bengals turned over the puck in the neutral zone. Nate Meyer tipped the puck forward to Seth Chumley, who raced up the middle of the Blaine zone, fought off a defender and slid the puck under goalie Bailey Ketola.

The Red Knights went into the first intermission with it's two-goal lead restored when Labosky picked up a loose puck in his own zone, sped up the left-wing boards and deep into the Blaine zone before centering a pass to Besse, who buried the puck to become the 14th played in state history to reach 120 career goals.

Although the hosts controlled much of the play in the second period, it was Blaine which scored the only goals of the period as Cline scored 3:26 into the middle frame and Jesse Norling tied the game with 7:40 to play in the period.

Once again, a late goal would give the Red Knights a lead heading into the intermission.

While killing a penalty, Patrick Graham knocked loose a puck deep in his own zone, where Labosky picked it up along the left boards and was off to the races as he sped base two Blaine defenders, cut to the net in the left faceoff circle and scored as he was taken to the ice by a third Bengal defender.

Blaine, however, would go onto outshoot its hosts, 12-6, in the final period while winning 13 of 19 faceoffs in the final 17 minutes to help control much of the play down the stretch.

BSM's final week before Christmas break features three road games, beginning Monday with a 7 p.m. game at Maple Grove. The Red Knights then go on a two-game northern road trip when they face the Marshall School, Friday, at 6 p.m. in Duluth, followed by Saturday's 3 p.m. game at Hibbing.
