Red Knights post-six goal win over Ponies.

Freshman Grant Besse recorded a hat trick and added an assist to lead Benilde-St. Margaret’s to a 9-3 win over Stillwater in its home opener for 2009-10.

After scoring the game-winning goal on the power play in Tuesday’s win at St. Cloud Tech, Besse added two more power-play goals, an even-strength tally and an assist on the game’s first goal.

Jake Horton tallied the game’s first goal with a shot from the left point that found its way through traffic at the six minute, 28 second mark of the opening frame. Pat Steinhauser made it a 2-0 score less than five minutes later but, on the game’s first power-play opportunity, Stillwater converted at Kyle Mogren scored with 1:20 play in the period.

Besse’s first goal proved to be important as the Ponies gained some momentum following their first goal. Besse then shunted that momentum when he took a pass from Brett Patterson and found the back of the next with five seconds showing on the clock.

It took just 13 seconds into the second period for the Red Knights to extend the lead to 4-1 as John Duda’s first goal of the second started the middle frame off for the hosts.

BSM went on its first power play of the game at 10:35 of the second period and it took just 22 seconds for Besse to collect his second goal of the game and the third period started with the home team holding a 5-1 lead.

Once again it took little time for the Red Knights to extend the lead as Christian Horn scored a shorthanded goal just 46 seconds into the final stanza.

The goals would come in a span of 1:24 as Horn’s second goal of the game came between Stillwater tallies by Sam Beutel and Sam Casey, but Steinhauser scored a short-handed goal at 9:17 and, with 4:38 to play, Besse converted another BSM power play to finish the scoring.

The Red Knights outshot their hosts, 39-25, with Jacob Meyers earning the win with a 22-save effort.

BSM returns to action with a road game at Aldrich Arena, Tuesday, Dec. 8, versus Hill-Murray. The game, slated for an 8 p.m. faceoff, will be aired live on Fox Sports North.
