Overtime thriller ends in draw.

Jacob Meyers made 40 saves, including a penalty shot with one minutes, 12 seconds remaining in regulation, and sixth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s skated to a 2-2 tie with fifth-ranked Hill-Murray.

Despite being outshot, 30-16, through the first two periods, the Red Knights held a 2-0 lead until the final minute of the middle frame thanks to Meyers’ efforts.

The game got off to a good start for the visitors as Brett Patterson scored his first goal of the season two minutes, 50 seconds into the contest.

Pat Steinhauser then found the back of the net after taking a John Duda pass low in the slot and burying the puck for his third goal of the second with 6:18 to play in the opening frame.

The Pioneers used a pair of power-play chances in the middle of the second period to roll up a 20-7 advantage in shots on goal. However, Meyers turned every effort aside until Willie Faust finally got his team on the scoreboard with 45.3 seconds on the clock.

BSM was unable to score on its only power-play chance, which last 3:47 following a major penalty to Faust for elbowing. Just 12 seconds after coming out of the penalty, Faust was able to get another shot past Meyers to tie the game with 6:20 remaining in the final period of regulation.

The Red Knights, for the only period in the game, held an advantage in shots on goal, 12-7 but the Pioneers had some quality scoring chances and, with 1:12 to play, Bavid Bruchu was tripped after getting behind the BSM defense and the hosts were awarded a penalty shot.

Jack Walsh was sent to center ice to take the shot and came in from the left side and into the slot, where he shot low to Meyers’ left side, but a quick glove hand by the Red Knight netminder kept the score tied.

Each team had quality scoring opportunities in the overtime session. BSM had three shots on goal early but Meyers and Tim Shaughnessy were both able to keep the puck out of their nets as the game ended in a draw.

Hill-Murray finished with a 42-32 advantage in shots on goal, in part due to four power-play chances while the Red Knights had just one.

BSM opens the North Suburban Conference portion of its schedule at home, Saturday, Dec. 12, when it hosts Irondale in a 2:30 p.m. matinee.
