Moorhead special teams take down Red Knights

Spud's 3 powerplay goals and 80% penalty kill were the difference

The Moorhead Spuds have boasted one of the top high school programs in Minnesota for the better part of three decades now.  There is no shame in losing to them.  However, we believe that we had the better team this year and that the game was clearly within our reach.  Our team reverted back to the types of mistakes that cost you against the best teams.  Our failure to win the special teams battle was a back breaker.  In Moorhead’s 5 - 2 victory, three of their tallies were on the powerplay and one was on an empty net.

"I loved how our guys came out in the first period.  They clearly came ready to play.  Pat Steinhauser continues to be the team’s catalyst as he scored both goals and he has been the Red Knights’ most effective forechecker.  Pat doesn’t know how to not hustle.  Looking back I would have to say that the turning point was when we were up 1 - 0 and failed to convert on the power play, and then we coughed up a goal with 30 seconds left in the period.  Our dominant first period performance resulted in a 1 - 1 tie.  We continued to carry the play the entire night, but it was one of those nights where the puck wouldn’t bounce for us and the Moorhead goalie was exceptional.  In fact, Moorhead coach Dave Morinville commented after the game that this was the best his goalie had played all year.  Regardless, we needed to find a way to win and we didn’t."

"There is no quit in our guys as they continued to pound the net, believing they could get the game back. We will take that positive and continue to work to eliminate back door goals and 2 on 1 rushes when we are shorthanded.  That part of our game needs to grow up in a hurry."
