Late goals enable Red Knight JV to down Hill-Murray

Zach Gionet snapped a 2-2 tie with 30 seconds to play.

Storm Sullivan scored just before the horn to end the first period to tie the score and the Benilde-St. Margaret's and Hill-Murray skated nearly 30 minutes without a tally until Zach Gionet scored with 30 seconds to play in the game, handing the Red Knights a 3-2 win.

Gionet's goal gave BSM its only lead of the game after being outshot, 41-14.

The teams skated through the first two-thirds of the opening period without a goal being scored by the final four minutes, 16 seconds, of the first stanza saw four goals.

Logan Sharp opened the scoring for the Pioneers with 4:16 remaining in the frame but Joe Haselman responded for the Red Knights just 28 seconds later.

Danny Cashman gave Hill-Murray its one-goal lead back with 1:31 to play in the period but Sullivan tied the game again when his shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle found the back of the net moments before the horn sounded to end the first period.

From their, Isaac Melin was the standout for BSM. He stopped 16 shots in the second period and 11 more in the third, tallying 39 saves for the game, keeping the score tied until Gionet was able to fire the game winner.

BSM returns to action Tuesday, when it plays its first North Suburban Conference game of the season, taking on St. Francis, at 5 p.m. at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center.
