Steinhauser nets a pair in Red Knight win.

Pat Steinhauser scored a pair of goals and Justin Quale made 32 saves in his debut as Benilde-St. Margaret's went on the road for the first time this season and took home a 5-3 win from the Marshall School.

The game was postponed by the weekend snowstorm and was moved from the St. Louis Park Recreation Center to Marshall's Lakeview Arena in Duluth.

The time on the bus showed in the first period as the Red Knights were never able to gain any momentum in the opening 17 minutes but Quale stopped all 11 shots he faced to keep the game scoreless.

“It’s never easy against Marshall and tonight was no different, BSM head coach Ken Pauly said. "You really have to gut out your wins in this building."

The second period started out much the same was as the entire first period had gone and Pauly called his team's timeout just three minutes, 28 seconds into the second period and his team responded.

Just 41 seconds later Pat Steinahauser put the Red Knights on the scoreboard, extending his point-scoring streak to 23 consecutive games, and the momentum for the visitors began to build.

Three and a half minutes later, they made the score 2-0 as Nick Lauth and Chris Flood went into the Hilltoppers zone on a 2-on-1 rush. Lauth's centering pass deflected off a Marshall defenesman and the junior winger had his first career goal.

BSM was carrying the play and the momentum at that point but got derailed by three penalties in a span of 2:10 late in the period, eventually allowing a Jordan Shockley 5-on-3 power-play with 3:28 remaining in the period to cut the lead in half.

The third period saw three goals scored in a span of 121 seconds early, starting with Grant Besse's team-leading sixth goal of the season, 3:42 into the final stanza.

Forty seconds later, Judd Peterson scored the first even-strength goal against BSM this season but Steinhauser answered just over a minute later when his initially shot went wide of the net but he picked up the rebound and scored his third goal of the season.

Down 4-2 late, Marshall pulled goalie Christian Coffman for an extra attacker and then got a power-play opportunity when Quale was called for tripping with 1:13 to play in the game.

Despite the pressure applied by a 6-on-4 power play, the Red Knights scored when Christian Horn chased down a loose puck in the Hilltoppers' zone. Unable to get the puck to the net, he skated it back into the neutral zone and passed the puck to Jake Horton near the BSM blue line.

From there, Horton turned toward the Marshall net and let loose a shot which hit the right post before finding the back of the net to give the Red Knights a 5-2 lead.

The home team didn't quit, however, and still managed to score on the power play as Connor Flaherty's shot from the left circle was deflected in front of the net and trickled through Quale's legs to finish the scoring.

“What a great night for Justin," Pauly said. "It’s too bad they got that goal at the end because he played very well in his first varsity game.

"If he would have played nervous we might have been in a hole. As it was, we played with the lead through most of the game and that was huge.”

Junior Christian Horn quietly chipped in with three assists on the night, significant because it brough his career scoring total to 101 points, a total which he has reached in just 59 career games.

Although the game left a few things to be desired, Pauly was happy to be able to make the game up just three days after it was postponed.

“Giving up our home game to come up to Duluth was clearly a disadvantage for us," he said. "But we needed to get the game in because we have a big one with Minnetonka on Saturday. We didn’t’ want to have an 11-day layoff between games.

Getting the game in also gave his team a little time to work on special teams.

“We still need to get our penalty kill down," he added. "In the guys' defense, three of the four power play goals against have been netted when the other team had a two-man advantage.

"We really haven't been given many full power-play opportunities either. We need more actual game time to get our timing down on the power play."

The team's first road game of the season leads into one of its biggest home games of the season, Saturday.

The Red Knights will host 10th-ranked Minnetonka, which ended BSM's 2009-10 season with a 3-1 section semifinal loss, at 7 p.m. at the Rec Center.
