Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys' Hockey

Shootout goals by Tanner Ahlborn and Joe Haselman propelled Benilde-St. Margaret's into the semifinals of the Holiday Hockey Classic, following a 2-2 tie with Eden Prairie.

All four goals in regulation came on the power play with the Red Knights striking first, 10 minutes 46 seconds into the contest, when Bobby Papetti buried a Zach Gionet rebound.

Just 90 seconds later, Austin MaCleod scored on a rebound for the Eagles to tie the score and it would stay 1-1 until the 8:40 mark of the second period.

Ahlborn poke checked the puck loose at the BSM blueline and got the puck to Seth Chumley, who skated in alone but was thwarted by Eden Prairie goalie Jack Graen.

However, Ahlborn picked up the rebound and scored the short-handed goal to give the Red Knights a 2-1 lead.

The game would stay that way until the final three minutes of the contest when MaCleod, on the power play once again, knocked home a loose puck from in front of the BSM net to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

After an uneventful five-minute overtime period, the teams were matched up in a five-on-five shootout to determine who would move onto the semifinals.

Chris Hickok and Joey Winter were both stopped on their attempts to deke Graen but Red Knight goalie Justin Qualie, who finished the game with 30 saves, did the same to John Sullivan and and Tyler Leddy of the Eagles.

Ahlborn finally broke the ice when he cut in from the left faceoff circle and snapped off a forehand shot between Green's legs.

After Quale stopped Brad Boldenow's deke attempt, Joe Haselman beat Graen over his glove and Quale's stop on Chad Dahlquist ended the affair.

In tomorrow's semifinal, BSM will face Maple Grove at 12:30 p.m., pitting a the Red Knights against a Crimson team which handed them a 4-3 loss last Tuesday.
