Loss to Wayzata ends Red Knight bid for title

Benilde-St. Margaret's overcame a 2-1 deficit in the semifinals before coming from behind, but could not do the same in the championship as the Red Knight junior varsity took second place in the Holiday Hockey Classic.

In Wednesday's semifinal, a rematch with Maple Grove, which BSM lost to, 4-3, eight days earlier, the Red Knights found themselves trailing by a goal in the second period.

Zach Gionet's first-period short-handed goal had BSM ahead midway through the first period but the Crimson would tie the score before the opening frame was over and then took the lead five minutes, 37 seconds into the second period.

Tanner Ahlborn, whose scored a key goal, Tuesday, versus Eden Prairie as well as a shootout goal, tied the score with 6:31 to play in the middle stanza and Bobby Papetti got the eventual game winner just 33 seconds later.

To seal the win, Papetti scored at 6:14 of the third period and Michael Nanne finished the scoring with 2:32 to play.

In Thursday's championship, Wayzata jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game's first 20 minutes and cruised to a 5-1 win.

Joe Haselman's power-play goal with 8:45 to play in the second period was BSM's lone tally and finished the scoring for both teams.

The Red Knights take a 5-3-1 record into the new year which and return to action Tuesday, with a 5 p.m. game versus North Suburban Conference foe Robbinsdale Cooper at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
