Daly sets up a pair in loss to Hornets

A defensive lapse by Benilde-St. Margaret's, late in the second period, saw Edina score three goals in a span of two minutes, six seconds, and the second-ranked Hornets held off a late rally to defeated the fifth-ranked Red Knights, 5-4.

"The game was lost on a three-minute lapse, where our defensive coverage completely broke down," BSM head coach Ken Pauly said. "In addition, our penchant for taking multiple penalties in a row continues to hurt our team.

"In the second period, we were unable to use our bench and we gassed our top people killing penalties."

Edina had carried a 2-1 lead into the second period as Ben Walker and Nick Leer sanwiched goals around a T.J. Moore tally in the opening frame.

The Red Knights wasted no time tying the score in the second period as they opened the stanza on the power play and, 32 seconds into the period, Jake Horton took a pass in the left circle from Grant Besse and pounded home his fifth goal of the year.

However, the Red Knights proceeded to take four consecutive penalties in the second period and it took its toll.

During their scoring spree, the Hornets recorded six of their 13 shots in the period, with Walker getting his second goal of the night to start the run at 11:15.

Bo Brauer's third goal of the season made it a 4-2 game with 3:59 to play in the period and, just 20 seconds later, Michael Sit score the eventual game winner.

The third period saw BSM control much of the play but it wasn't until 9:27 into the final frame that the Red Knights cut into the lead.

Dan Labosky got a shot from the slot and his own rebound, both of which were stopped by Hornet goalie Connor Girard. Grant Besse came in from the left circle and converted the second rebound for his team-leading 14th goal of the season.

The Red Knight special teams got its second goal of the night as BSM went on the power play with 1:13 to play in the game.

With goalie Justin Quale, who came on in relief to start the third period, pulled for an extra attacked, Pat Steinhauser won a faceoff in the left circle to Daly, who's shot from the left point was redirected Jake O'Borsky and past Girard.

"The good news is that we won the special teams battle," Pauly said as his team went 2-for-4 on the power play and was 5-for-5 killing penalties.

"Certainly there is no shame in losing a one-goal game to a good Edina team, but we wanted more and if we could have covered those mental lapses, we could have registered a big win.

"As it is, we will take away the positives and move onward."

The Red Knights return to North Suburban Conference play, Thursday, when they play host to St. Louis Park in a 7 p.m. game at the Rec Center.
