Besse scores twice to reach 50 goals

Grant Besse scored a pair of first-period goals and Benilde-St. Margaret's went onto an 8-2 win over Osseo.

“We had great energy tonight and really some picture-perfect goals," Red Knight head coach Ken Pauly said. "It was a pretty impressive win against a very solid Osseo team.”

Besse's two goals followed Mike Blessing's second tally of the season and sent the Red Knights into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Dan Mathewson scored on the power play for Osseo just two minutes, 15 seconds into the second period to cut BSM's lead to 3-1 but Taylor Topousis registered his first goal of the season 42 seconds later to restore the three-goal lead.

Nick Lauth, playing his first game after returning from a concussion, scored with 18 seconds remaining in the second period as the Red Knights took a 6-1 lead into the second intermission.

A 15-7 advantage in shots on goal in the third period led to another three-goal burst as Jake Horton, Dan Labosky and Christian Horn tacked on goals to the BSM tally.

For Besse, a sophomore, the two goals give him 50 for his career in just 43 games. They were also his 19th and 20th of the season.

Labosky, who set up both of Besse's goals, finished the game with three points and Chris Flood chipped in with a career-best three assists.

"Dan Labosky, T.J. Moore and Grant Besse were dominant tonight," Pauly said. "They move the puck to each other very well and that’s what is making them so effective right now.

"I thought Michael Blessing had a very good night, especially in the the offensive zone, and Topousis continues to take more minutes each game and, if he can maintain his level of play, I don’t see that changing."

Meanwhile, Anders Jecha stopped 23 of 25 shots to raise his record to 8-2-0 on the season.

The fifth-ranked Red Knights return to action Saturday, when they face 16th-ranked Holy Angels at Richfield Arena. The opening faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
