BSM super soph scores five in victory

It took Grant Besse just over 15 minutes to get his team on the scoreboard.

It took him just 127 seconds to give them a 3-1 lead.

After falling behind less than three minutes into the game, Benilde-St. Margaret's, led by Besse's five-goal performance, came from behind to record an 8-1 win over Chisago Lakes.

With Besse's performance coming on the heels of Pat Steinhauser's four-goal effort, Saturday, Red Knight head coach Ken Pauly expressed his amazement at his goal-scoring leaders.

"Besse just keeps scoring," he said of the sophomore who already has 26 goals on the season and is ninth on the school's all-time list with 56 career goals. "I don’t think that I have ever coached a team where one player scores four goals and, the next game, another player nets five."

The early going didn't look good for the hosts as Ory Burggraf banged home an Andrew Habel rebound two minutes, 38 seconds into the game.

The Wildcats controlled much of the opening period and Pauly stated his concerns.

"Our energy was certainly lacking in the first period," he said. "Chisago Lakes really outplayed and outhustled us for major parts of the opening period.

"I really think it was a natural letdown coming off of the big game with Holy Angels and that awesome atmosphere, as well as the thought of Moorhead looming on Thursday. Regardless, there is no excuse in not being ready to bring it from the opening face off.

After surviving those first 15 minutes, BSM finally responded when Besse scored at 15:09 of the opening frame on the power play.

It then took him just 35 seconds to get his second goal as he carried the puck up the right wing boards before cutting into the faceoff circle and scoring the eventual game-winning goal.

Besse then completed his hat trick just 16 seconds into the second period and the score remained 3-1 as Ben Bratrud's goaltending kept the Red Knights at bay until Steinhauser scored with 1:46 to play in the middle frame.

Besse scored twice in the opening six minutes of the final period, including another power-play goal, and Mike Blessing's goal at 6:09 sent the game into running time.

Steinhauser tallied a short-handed goal with 6:23 to play in the game to round out the scoring.

"Chisago Lakes is one of the sneaky-dangerous teams in the league," Pauly said afterwards. "It's nice to have them out of the way."

Up next for the Red Knights is a road trip to Moorhead for a Thursday meeting with the 12th-ranked Spuds. Game time at the Moorhead Sports Center is slated for 7:30 p.m.
