Red Knights lose debut as state's No. 1 team.

Nick Turbitt's rebound goal on the power play with two seconds remaining on the clock gave Spring Lake Park a stunning 2-1 win over Benilde-St. Margaret's just one day after the Red Knights had assumed the number one position in the Minnesota Hockey Hub's state rankings.

"No question, it is a very tough loss," Red Knights head coach Ken Pauly said following the game. "It’s costly as to the conference standings and it just hurts to lose a game that we had no business losing.

"But give Spring Lake Park credit. They had a game plan and they executed. We did too many little things wrong tonight to deserve to win."

Both of the Panthers goals came from around the crease as A.J. Fossen banged home a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble, 10 minutes, 38 seconds into the game.

Barely two minutes later, BSM tied the score while killing a penalty. Patrick Daly got the puck behind his own net and gave the puck to T.J. Moore along the left-wing boards near his own blue line.

From there, Moore took care of things on his own, cutting across to the left side and scoring his 12th goal of the season on his forehand.

After outshooting their hosts, 25-13, through the first two periods, the Red Knights dominated the third period, holding a 21-3 advantage in shots until getting whistled, for the second time in the game, for having too many players on the ice.

The Panthers went on the power play with just 26 seconds remaining in game and got their final two shots in the closing seconds. Fossen's shot from the inside edge of the right circle was stopped by Justin Quale but Turbitt came in from the left side to bang the puck home for the game winner.

"We had some great individual performances," Pauly said. "Pat Steinhauser, T.J. Moore, and Michael Blessing worked very hard and each was a factor all night. It’s too bad that the individual performances could not be matched by a great team effort.

"When you lose like that, it’s on everyone – players and coaches. Now we need to climb back up that mountain because we took a big spill tonight and we have no time to hang onto this loss. We have a national powerhouse coming into or building and it will be no small task to try to bounce back against them."

That national power is 33-5-2 Shattuck-St. Mary's, which the Red Knights host Thursday. The opening faceoff at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center is slated for 7 p.m.
