Ahlborn's goal lifts BSM past Sabres.

Tanner Ahlborn scored on the power-play, two minutes, 50 seconds into overtime and Benilde-St. Margarets' junior varsity claimed a 3-2 win over the Shattuck-St. Mary's midget AA squad.

The Red Knights went on their sixth power play of the game, 1:28 into overtime, and used it to put an end to the game when Andrew Murnane got off a shot from right point. Ahlborn deflected the shot to the far side of the net and past the blocker of goalie Zach Quail, who suffered the defeat despite a 35-save effort.

Ahlborn set up the game's first goal, just 3:47 into the first period, as Brooks Rennie scored his eighth goal of the season.

The Sabres answered that goal just 31 seconds later and the score remained knotted at 1-1 past the midway mark of the second period.

With 6:20 to play in the middle stanza, Joey Winter found the back of the net for the first of BSM's two power-play goals in the game but, just over three minutes later, Shattuck-St. Mary's tied the score again and neither team would find a way to put the game away in regulation.

The Red Knights controlled much of the game in the first and third periods, outshooting the Sabres 13-3 and 12-3, respectively, but were outshot 14-9 in the second period.

Isaac Melin was stellar in the second period, turning aside 13 shots before finishing with 20 for the game to earn his eighth win of the season.

BSM is in action at home again, Saturday, when it hosts Irondale in a 12:30 p.m. matinee.
