Red Knights honored at annual banquet

Daly leads team honorees at season-ending event.

Benilde-St. Margaret's handed out its 2011 boys hockey awards at the team's annual banquet, held at Jax Cafe in Minneapolis.

Four Red Knights represented BSM on the North Suburban Conference all-academic team -- Vince Beacom, Mike Blessing, Patrick Daly and Taylor Topousis -- while Beacom and Jake Horton shared the team's All Star Sports Academic Award for having the highest GPA on the team.

On the statistical side, three players received honors for reaching 100 career points during the season. Christian Horn finished the season second on the school's all-time scoring list with 136 points while Pat Steinhauser finished his career with 135 points. Grant Besse, with 103 career points, is just the third player in school history to reach the century plateau in two seasons.

Besse was honored as the team's goal-scoring leader (33), posting his second consecutive 30-goal season, while Daly led BSM in assists (37) and Steinhauser was the team's scoring leader (54).

Six players earn All-North Suburban Conference honors: Besse, Daly, Horn, Horton, Dan Labosky and Steinhauser. Four more were named honorable mention all-conference: Anders Jecha, T.J. Moore, Jake O'Borsky and Justin Quale.

Additionally, Daly, who will play at the University of Wisconsin next season, earned three other post-season awards. Along with becoming just the second Mr. Hockey Award finalist in school history, he was named first-team all-state by the St. Paul Pioneer Press and was a second-team selection on the Minneapolis Star Tribune's all-metro team and the Associated Press' all-state team.

Horton was also an honorable mention selection on both all-state teams and Besse, Horn and Steinhauser earn honorable mention recognition on the Pioneer Press team.

Best Defensive Forward: Nick Lauth
Andrew Alberts (1998) Most Improved Player: Taylor Topousis
Most Determined Player: Pat Steinhauser
Vic St. Martin Coaches Award: T.J. Moore

Two awards were presented for the junior varisty team by coach Chris McGowan. Goalie Isaac Melin received the team's Sportsmanship Award while Bobby Papetti was honored with the Coaches Award.

The captains for the 2011-12 season were also announced. Leading next year's Red Knight squad will be co-captains Christian Horn and Jake Horton, along with assistant captains Grant Besse and T.J. Moore.
