BSM survives early scare, cruises past Chisago Lakes

Red Knights shake Wildcats late to post victory.

Despite a 30-6 advantage in shots on goal in the first period, Benilde-St. Margaret's couldn't shake Chisago Lake early but the Red Knights managed to pull away and post a 7-2 win over the Wildcats.

Freshman Ben Newhouse recorded a season-high three assists in the win, including a helper on the game-winning goal and two on the power-play, where BSM converted three of seven chances.

The Red Knights jumped on top early when Jake O'Borsky scored the first of his two goals, four minutes, 52 seconds into the contest, but Bradee Thompson answered that four minutes later with the first of his two goals.

Christian Horn put BSM back on top just two minutes later but another goal by Thompson, this one on the power, came with less than four minutes to play in the opening frame.

Jacob Dubose kept the Wildcats in the game by stopping 28 shots in the first period and would finish the game with a 61-save effort. Still, it wasn't enough to thwart the Red Knights.

O'Borsky broke the 2-2 tie with a power-play goal just 90 seconds into the second period and, barely two minutes later, a play which started deep in BSM's zone resulted in a two-goal lead as Tyler Ellegard picked up the puck in the left corner of the Red Knights' zone. He made a quick, cross-ice pass to Dan Labosky who skated the puck into the Wildcats zone before centering the puck to T.J. Moore, who deked Dubose before scoring his 20th goal of the season.

Still, BSM entered the final period with just a two-goal lead despite holding a 50-8 advantage in shots on goal.

However, any thoughts Chisago Lakes had of a comeback were quickly dashed when Grant Besse got the puck at the bottom of the right circle in the Wildcats' zone. After getting the puck from Labosky, he turned and quickly snapped a shop into the upper right corner of the net, popping the water bottle on top of the net into the air and drawing plenty of oohs and aahs from the crowd.

He would add another power-play goal at the eight-minute mark and Christian Horn scored his second with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

BSM's three-for-seven performance on the power-play gives the Red Knights 15 power-play goals on 32 chances in their last six games. BSM was the recipient of three major power plays in the game, which resulted in 12:25 of power-play time and 30 power-play shots on goal.

Now 6-0-0 in North Suburban Conference play and atop the league standings, the Red Knights face NSC foe Irondale, Thursday, at the Schwan's Super Rink. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Sullivan, Polson-McCannon notch hat tricks in victory.

Storm Sullivan scored three of the game's first five goals and Austin Polson-McCannon had three goals and three assists to lead Benilde-St. Margaret's to a 10-1 junior varsity win over St. Francis.

The duo put the Red Knights on top, 2-0, scoring goals 71 seconds apart midway through the opening period. Matt Mogensen followed that with power-play goals 63 seconds later, at nine minutes, 34 seconds of the first period, to make it a 3-0 game and Sullivan wrapped up his hat trick by the 5:10 mark of the second period with a pair of power-play tallies.

Both Mogensen and Tanner Ahlborn finished with a goal and two assists on the night as 10 of BSM's 12 skaters got into the scoring column. Jack Lawton had three assists for BSM and a plus/minus rating of plus seven.

The Red Knights are home again, Friday, for a 5:30 p.m. contest with Chisago Lakes.
